Weld County Highlights Projects During Ad Valorem Check Presentation

During a special presentation held on the Fort Lupton campus of Aims Community College, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation and Noble Energy presented their 2012 ad valorem checks to Weld County. The total of the two checks was $148,557,244 or nearly 33% of all taxes paid to the Weld County Treasurer.

The Weld County Board of Commissioners and Aims Community College used the event as an opportunity to talk about the projects and programs the revenue from the oil and gas industry helps to fund.

"This event was a great opportunity for the Board to talk about what projects the county is able to undertake as a result of the oil and gas revenue," said Commissioner Chairman William Garcia. Those projects include:

TABOR Refund: Every real property owner in Weld County receives a temporary tax credit on the County mill levy, and the County is able to extend the tax credit primarily due to the revenue from oil and gas.

Women targeted in string of northwest metro Denver robberies

THORNTON, Colo. — Women are on alert and officers are on the lookout for two suspected thieves in a string of robberies against women in parking lots outside stores.

Thornton police say two men waved a gun at a woman in a parking lot in Superior Sunday afternoon and stole her purse.

They also tried to rob the clerk at a gas station in Thornton.

But that wasn’t all. Police believe the same suspects tried to grab another woman’s purse as she put groceries in her car outside a Costco store in Thornton.

A friend rushed to help that woman, and the suspect took off in a car.

Police say the description of the suspects and their vehicle is similar in all three cases.

State’s 5th largest school district hid millions while cutting services to students?

DENVER — On a cold winter day students of the Adams 12 Five Star School District find themselves wandering home between a pair of old rusty train tracks.

Over the last three years, the District has cut its budget by more than $56 million, eliminated bus routes and cut more than 200 jobs and middle school sports.

But a three-month investigation by FOX31 Denver raises serious questions regarding the district’s finances, its budget process and whether all those cuts were really necessary.

“I think that if someone in good conscience knew they were deliberately presenting this [Executive Summary Financial Plan and Budget] they would have to question their ethics,” said Professor James Sorensen of the University of Denver, Daniels College of Business.

Adams county man found guilty in murder, kidnapping of ex-girlfriend

By Paula Vargas

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — The man found in a vehicle with the body of his ex-girlfriend in a 2011 incident was found guilty of first degree murder, kidnapping, and sexual assault by an Adams County jury Friday.

On March 24, 2011 Westminster police officers responded to the 11000 Block of Stuart Street on a suspicious vehicle with black trash bags taped to the inside of the windows.

Police found a dead woman in the vehicle with Christopher Mainock, who investigators say had self-inflicted injuries.

The woman was later identified as 20-year-old Sarah Barroga-Hulett.

Prosecutors say Mainock, who was in a previous relationship with Barroga-Hulett, used chloroform to subdue his ex-girlfriend and drag her to his vehicle.

Then he forced her to disrobe in the back seat of his car where he sexually assaulted her and stabbed her to death, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office.
