Soaking rain, cooler temperatures arrive in Colorado

DENVER — Another round of fall weather has arrived in Colorado. Rain showers began in metro Denver Tuesday evening and will continue into Wednesday.

High temperatures will plunge 25 degrees from 90 on Tuesday to 65 on Wednesday. The wind will gust to better than 25 mph at times.

Some spots could get as much as 1″ of needed rain by late Wednesday. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the Waldo Canyon Fire area through Wednesday. A flood watch is also up for much of the western and southwestern parts of the state.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the central and southern mountains where 8″ of snow could fall at elevations above 11,000 feet.

Fire destroys 2 mobile homes in Adams County

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — The American Red Cross is assisting two families left homeless following a Tuesday afternoon grill fire which officials believe is responsible for destroying two homes.

The fire, which broke out shortly before 2 p.m., happened in the 8500 block of Cook way in unincorporated Adams County.

“There was just no controlling it, the flames were about twenty feet in the air,” one witnesses told FOX31 Denver late Tuesday afternoon.

No one was injured in the blaze but both both properties are considered uninhabitable.

“It was pretty breathtaking it was like a nightmare come true,” said Dawson Jackson who lost a home in the fire.

Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours but wrapped up the clean-up around 7 p.m.

GOLDEN, Colo. – More than 300 climbers and hikers gathered into 58 teams Saturday with one goal in mind—to summit the state’s 14,000-foot peaks to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Colorado Mountain Club.

Founded in 1912, the group now has several chapters throughout Colorado and organizes approximately 3,000 outings each year.

Health department urges immunizations to fight whooping cough epidemic

DENVER — The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is now reporting 763 cases of whooping cough in Colorado. From 2007-2011, the average number of cases was only 158 in the same time period.

FOX31 Denver spoke with a mother whose daughter caught the bacterial infection. “She would cough so hard she would almost vomit,” said Missy Wiggs.

Her daughter, Shelby, got sick August 1. Her fever went away soon after, but the cough persisted.

“[Doctors] said it was a sinus infection, but someone at school said whooping cough was going around,” Wiggs said. “I asked them to swab her and they said just for peace of mind they would swab her. Six days later they came back and said it was whooping cough.”

Doctors with the state health department aren’t altogether surprised.

CDOT Launches "Don't Ruin the Ride" Campaign to Reduce Motorcycle Crashes and Deaths

Nearly 40% of motorcycle fatalities in Colorado involve alcohol, which is why the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is launching its “Don’t Ruin the Ride” motorcycle safety campaign this Labor Day Weekend.

The campaign coincides with the “100 Days of Heat” DUI enforcement period, which culminates after the holiday weekend.

Impaired riding is a major problem that contributed to 27 motorcycle fatalities in Colorado last year, equaling 18% of the state’s total alcohol-related fatalities.  The new campaign will focus on increasing rider awareness of the dangers and consequences of impaired riding, as well encouraging all riders—even after one drink—to find a better way to get home.

Taste of Colorado draws 500,000 to downtown

DENVER — Foodies from across Colorado ventured to Civic Center Park in search of the perfect rib, the sweetest slice of pie and the smoothest sip of wine as part of the 29th annual Taste of Colorado.

More than a half million people enjoyed food from more than fifty vendors.  The downtown park and surrounding streets were lined with everything from chicken and waffles to Asian fusion creations.

Temperatures hit the 90’s but that didn’t affect the taste buds of those in search of those huge slow cooked turkey legs.

Kelly Wild and her husband celebrated the anniversary of their first date at the Taste.

“Every year we come and celebrate,” Kelly says. “Now we bring our little guy.”  But it’s kind of hard to focus on romance with “Sticky Ribs” from the Parallel 17 restaurant just feet away.  As one food lover exclaimed, “It’s just a smorgasbord, you could just go nuts!”

Obama kicks off Rocky Mountain showdown

By Adam Aigner-Trewogy | CNN White House Producer

BOULDER, Colorado (CNN) — Visiting his second Colorado university in less than a week, President Barack Obama tried to spark a little voter registration competition on Sunday between two traditional sports rivals.

“I know you guys are a little bummed out about the game yesterday. I know the Rocky Mountain Showdown did not go down the way you wanted,” the president told a crowd of 13,000 at Colorado University on Sunday.

The C.U. Buffaloes lost their annual football matchup against cross-state rivals Colorado State University on Saturday, but Obama said he was going to give them a chance to “get even.”

“We are giving the Buffs and the Rams a second chance to go at it this fall,” he said. “We’ve set up a Rocky Mountain Rumble to see which school can register more voters, C.U. or Colorado State.”
