Winter is on its way, which causes a hardship for some of Thornton's fixed-income seniors and disabled residents.  Their sidewalks must be shoveled so they can safely walk to their mailboxes, receive their Meals on Wheels deliveries, and avoid being ticketed for unshoveled snow.  However, the residents in this program have health restrictions that prevent them from shoveling their own snow, cannot afford to pay for snow removal, and don't have family in the area who can help them.

Sex offender in Northglenn standoff lived legally near school

NORTHGLENN, Colo. -- Neighbors of a sex offender who shot himself during a standoff with Northglenn police Monday night question why he was allowed to live just a few doors down from a middle school.

Matthew Anderson, 40, was arrested in June 2006, after talking online to a police officer he thought was a girl under 15.

An affidavit in that case shows Anderson saying, "I like kissing," "an touching," "you all over..." He also said, "is kinda illegal for
us u kno."

He got two years probation for that crime. But Monday, police came to arrest him for allegedly trying to lure another girl.

Anderson shot at police, injured one officer, then turned the gun on himself.

"My son is 14 and he goes to Northglenn Middle School. And he walks by this house every day. So it's scary to know that someone lives that close to us," says neighbor Shannon Medina.

Several warrants out for sex offender suspect that died in Northglenn standoff

NORTHGLENN, Colo. -- FOX31 News is learning more about Matthew Anderson, the man who allegedly killed himself after a stand-off with Northglenn Police Monday night.

Authorities say there were several warrants out for his arrest -- one of them was for violating his probation for a crime he pleaded guilty to last year -- enticing and luring a child over the internet and the attempted sexual assault of that child.

It happened in Jefferson County on June 6, 2009. Anderson was sentenced to two years probation, but according to court documents, he violated that probation by failing to appear for his scheduled appointments, failing to contact the probation department and failing to submit to substance testing.

Officer recovers from shooting; sex offender suspect dead

NORTHGLENN, Colo. -- A Northglenn Police officer was recovering at home Tuesday after getting shot by a convicted sex offender while serving an arrest warrant.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday in the 1400 block of Bowman Place and led to a standoff that lasted until the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

Police say officers had gone to serve a warrant for criminal exploitation of a child to 40-year old Matthew Anderson, after a six week undercover sting on him. As they entered the home, Anderson fired shots at the officers.

"They knocked on the door, he didn't answer, so they breached the door," said Northglenn Police Chief Russ Van Houten. "The first two shots were then followed by at least two if not three more."

Police say Dennis Alps, an eight-year veteran of the police force, was hit in the right shoulder. A second bullet hit his body armor, saving his life.

Residents demand removal of giant debris pile from house explosion

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. -- Help may be on the way for some Adams County residents who've spent the past four months living next to a giant debris pile.

County officials say they've sent a notice to the property owner demanding that the lot be cleaned up. The debris is the result of a natural gas explosion that leveled a home at 7724 Sherman Street on September 8th.

The property now belongs to Freddie Mac. The home was foreclosed on several weeks before the blast.

"The ultimate responsibility for the cleanup is the property owner's and in this case the property owner failed to act and clean the property," said Besharah Najjar, Adams County Public Works Director.

Najjar said the county sent a blight notice to Freddie Mac in late December after receiving a complaint from a local resident and inspecting the property.

"That was the first complaint we got was on December 29," said Najjar Monday.
