Winter sports enthusiasts at risk as Colorado avalanche forecast center in jeopardy

Press Release

Colorado leads the nation in avalanche fatalities

Friends of CAIC hosts G.N.A.R Premier to help offset CAIC Budget Cuts The Colorado Avalanche Information Center’s backcountry forecasting funding is under scrutiny by the state legislature.

A non?profit group of young skiers is taking steps to raise funds and awareness to keep this important program alive, with an event on Thursday, March 10th in Denver.

The Governor and the Joint Budget Committee recently announced plans to balance the budget in Colorado in 2011 including cutting the severance tax funding of the Colorado Avalanche information Center.

Colorado leads the nation in avalanche fatalities, and already has seen five deaths this winter from avalanches. With winter still raging and large spring storms on the way, more and more skiers venture into the backcountry, and the CAIC forecasts are the best source of information to keep them safe. It is imperative that we keep the CAIC running and providing valuable information for both recreational users and professionals venturing into the backcountry.
